How to set up a Website

If you have a few minutes to spare, I’d like to show you how to set up a new website, optimize it to bring in an income and some of the tools I use. This is a basic step by step guideline and will work with setting up a simple site. If you know what  the site will be about, skip down to website editors.

If you’re building a new site to put Adsense on or sell  Clickbank or other product, you’ll need a simple, straightforward site. This post should fill the bill.

The best way I think to explain this process is like a recipe. You buy a bunch of ingredients at the grocery store and until you mix them all together and bake them, you don’t have a finished product. This process is the recipe and the steps are the ingredients.

Say you’re selling picnic tables and want a website to sell them. Here’s how to proceed.

First, you’ll need a domain name with the words picnic table in it. You’ll need to do a little research to find out what domains are available. Simply go to a site like Go Daddy, which sells domain names and use their domain search tool . Almost always, the exact name you want won’t be available so just pick something with a picnic table variation in it and go ahead and buy it.

Second, you’re going to need a company like Host Gator to show your new site to the world. Pick a plan that’s only what you need. If you’re only going to show a single site, go with the most inexpensive plan. If you’ll be hosting more than one site you’ll obviously need to kick the plan up a notch or two.

The third ingredient you’ll need is a website editor. Fortunately if you go with Host Gator or some of the other popular companies for your hosting, they offer a free site builder that’s included in your hosting plan. They also have website templates you can use for your picnic table site. If you don’t like the site builder they offer, there are lots of free website builders you can use. I did a quick search on Google just before I started this post – this is the first page they have for “free website design software”.

Fourth, you will have to be to point your new picnic table domain to your hosting company. For instructions on how to do this just go to my previous post “How to set up a blog” and take a look at the second paragraph on nameservers.

Ok. Let’s take a quick look at where we are with our recipe and maybe grab a cup of coffee. If you’re completely new to all this you may be grabbing an adult beverage ;-)

After you’ve completed all the above, you’re done with the ingredients for your recipe. Now we’re moving on to the seasoning. Just as with the recipe, your website will be pretty bland if you don’t add your seasonings. The seasonings for your new site are the keywords. Now, you’ll be heading over to use the free Google Keywords tool. to find some relevant keywords for your new site. Go to my previous post “Making money from home isn’t as hard as it used to be” for info on how to use this tool. Look for a high volume of searches for different words and ideally low competition. Click the box for each keyword you want to save and download them to a file – about 10 good keywords will do. For my keyword work, I use something called Market Samurai which has so many options to find promising keywords it’s amazing. If you want to use this tool free for 7 days to try it, there’s a link on the right side.

All you have to do now is “season” your new website with your keywords. How? Simply sprinkle some of the keywords you’ve uncovered into the text – especially the titles of your site when you’re building it. Don’t overdo it and don’t make it sound crazy. Just a pinch here and a dash there so the text or story sounds natural, flows well and makes the search engines know your site is relevant to picnic tables.

After your site has been up for a week or two, Google and the search engines will have had a chance to crawl it and you can start to check your traffic with Alexa. Sign up for a free Alexa account and you can check your traffic stats by just adding a snippet of code to your website. So how do you add this snippet to your site so Alexa can find it?

That’s for another blog post!

What do you have on tap for 2012?

Almost everyone will be making a New Year’s resolution to end a habit they’ve acquired. Some will be successful; some won’t, as it goes every year. A few will endeavor to make a positive change to their life and be adding a thing or two to their life.

How about you?  Will you be staying with the same old things or trying to improve a few things if you can?

If you’re thinking about starting a business in the comfort of your home there are many advantages. I mean, you can’t beat the commute. I usually grab a cup of coffee and hit the home office. My morning commute is about 30 feet. On the way, I look out the window in winter and thank God that I’m not wasting gas, watching a line of cars right behind me and wondering how much of a chain reaction there would be if I had to stop quickly . There are also numerous tax advantages that come with running a home business.

Welcome to my first annual New Year’s blog post!

I’ve been checking home businesses to bring you the best. The newest I’ve found is called Fresh Store Builder. You’ve probably heard of Amazon.com? This is a script that’s the brainchild of a guy named Carey Baird – a programmer from the United Kingdom. You buy the script, upload it to your web host and you can build an unlimited number of Amazon stores and sell anything you wish.

I’ve been playing around with it for a couple months and it’s amazing. If you do your homework and find what people are buying on Amazon.com, you can make a pretty decent income. Simply by building a few stores, you now have multiple streams of income – and FSB includes something called auto populate. Set up new categories, click the auto populate button and this thing goes off to Amazon.com and populates your categories with Amazon products ready to sell and even includes your own shopping cart so people can buy what they want and checkout right from your store. Genius!  It’s absolutely worth a look if you’re thinking of starting your own home business.

Another great candidate for your own at-home business is Global Domains International.  You can pick from 10 different websites they supply to you or design your own with the GDI site builder in a few minutes. They pay you when you generate signups, which is pretty easy to do and they deposit your commission money into your PayPal account on the 15th of each month. You set your own payment threshold and tell them when to pay you.

Another of the easiest ways I can give you to make money is something called Wom Vegas or Word-Of-Mouth Vegas.  With this home business you can earn different incomes in about a hundred different ways with everything they offer. A short list of income generators include cell phone ads, promotions in your own city, banner sales, contests – everything you can imagine that you can do online and get paid for (well, almost everything ;-)). Timothy Drobnick came up with this site and keeps dreaming up new ways to help you make money almost daily and using this, it’s kind of fun to make money and doesn’t even feel like work. He’ll answer any support questions you may have  usually within minutes of asking.

All three of these home businesses are the quickest ways I’ve found this year to make an income online. And I’ve checked lots of work at home ways to make money.

So what’s it going to be for 2012? You can do the easy secure thing and go to your job, know exactly how much you’ll be taking home next week, next month and next year. Or, you can go in a different direction, start one of these and maybe you'll really surprise yourself when checking your sales and find you made much more than you expected last week? I know the way I’m going to be making my income in 2012.

And I absolutely love the commute!

Advertising Your Online Business

Truly, there are about as many ways to advertise as you can imagine. On the Advertising Page of this blog, I’ve listed some of the methods I use which I feel are some of the best. Don’t forget about offline advertising for a home business either. A few years ago, I actually printed flyers and posted them around stores and Laundromats where I live, generally where people have a few minutes to read them. Another good offline method that works is having a couple magnetic signs made up to put on your vehicle. Sometimes this last way is good for the simple reason that people will actually stop and talk to you if they’re interested.

Of course the most efficient way to advertise is online and I’ll say it again. If you want to signup people or sell anything online, learn how to copy write. It’s the single best skill you can learn. If you can move people with your words alone you’ll be successful in whatever you do online. On the other hand if your ad stinks, doesn’t flow well or misspelled, you’re not going very far no matter how much you spend for advertising. I like the free advertising methods best. If you have more time than money consider traffic exchanges. You just add the web address of whatever you want to advertise and surf to look at other people’s sites to earn credits for your sites. It’s easy but very b-o-r-i-n-g.

Another good way to advertise is using a site like List Joe. You can sign up free, let them send you emails (use a junk email account for this) and just click on the credit link. You’ll have to look at the site for 20 seconds to receive credit. Again, easy but not quite as boring. You can then send your advertisement  to their list  that people will read – or you hope they will. With List Joe you can also check the open rate of your ads. Again, copy writing is the key. I look at it in steps. If it’s a good ad they 1) have to open it, 2) actually look at your site or offer  and 3) if you’re REALLY lucky (or GOOD), you’ll actually get some conversions (sales).

I’ve saved the best-or worst, depending on your experience with Google, which is their AdWords network. Like it or not, Google is the big Kahuna and if you have more money than time you can try this. Sign up for an Adwords account-you’ll have to put in a credit card – and go to it. You’ll only get a 3 line ad so make it count! Now and then, Google will offer you $100 for free advertising to start as a new customer. This can take a few days to use up or a few hours, depending on the click amount you set. You can get visitors to whatever you’re advertising almost immediately but check your advertising balance daily or even hourly until you get the hang of it and especially if you’re using their “welcome $100 balance”. If that runs out you guessed it, they will start charging your card.

Well, that's the long and short of the advertising game but then I've only scratched the surface. I'll be adding more software titles and short descriptions for them to the advertising page in a short while. These are some of the things I'm trying out & testing now. If they're good and worth a mention they'll make the blog.

Tips for an online business

Seems Everyone today wants to start a business and work for themselves.

And why not?

The economy is still in the tank and there's a number of reasons why you'd like to start a business.

The key to success is to do something you love – whether you'd be paid for it or not.

If you love what you do, you'll become a success.
Please notice I said become.

Basically, here's the roadmap:

1. Determine what it is you love to do.

2. Apply this to the business you'd like to begin.

3. Find the quickest way from point A to B.

3. Rinse and repeat.

It's no more complicated than that. And this works for everything – especially an online business.

Here's a tip  I'll share with you right now for an online business.

Use every piece of software at your disposal. Whatever you can use to help you get the job done quicker or more efficiently, why not use it?

Google some of the business, design, email software available now to help you run a business and it's amazing. And there's more arriving every day.

Here's another tip: Never stop learning. Everything new you learn will make you more valuable.

Here‚s a trick I use: When you learn something new, write it down (or copy & paste)
into a journal on your computer. Keyword the journal entry –  so it's searchable.

You learned this once, you don't need to learn it again – but you will probably need to go back and reference it at a later time.

Think about it. If you learn one new thing every day, you'll know 30 new things by the end of each month, or 360 a year.

Let's get started…
